It would be unreasonable to expect every morning to be inspiring, right? Was Thoreau truly inspired on every walk in the woods, or was it simply just most of them?
Watching the lake freeze and change throughout the early part of winter was magical and with spring around the corner I’m eager to see her change again, and it’s possible there will be ice for another three months.
Everywhere I’ve been it seems people talk about the lake (ok, less so in the Great Plains). Typically, meaning the largest lake in near proximity, or the msot prominent lake, most popular, something along those terms. What’s amazing here, is that when people say the lake, they’re actually referring to the largest freshwater lake in the world.
My inability, or difficulty, to speak up for myself has been a struggle for a long time. It’s been a common thread through my career, relationships, and my personal pursuits. But today, I bring you a more lighthearted example.
Typical of my mornings, I was at Babycaes Muffin Company, where I had my usual, a house coffee to go and an almond poppy seed muffin.
Once in a while, they have free samples at the cash register, today was one of those lucky mornings. As I always do, I endulged in the free samples, this time a girl scout cookie inspired brownie, but, like, a hodgepodge of all the girl scout cookies, and it was delicious. I knew this because I had purchased the full bar numerous times, but I pretend it’s one I’ve never had so they’re not suspicious of me having a sample.
Just as I was putting the sample in my mouth I noticed what appeared to be a square piece of wax paper on the bottom of the bar. I was already fully committed to putting it in my mouth and having it half way in, then taking it out would have made for all kinds of strange social interactions.
Unsure of exactly what it was, I was able to seperate it with my tongue and push it to the side of my mouth while eating the rest of the sample, and with a partially full mouth of food responded to the staff’s goodbye’s with a “have a nice day!” gesture.
Quickly, I get next door to the shop and actually bite down on it, as maybe it was just a very thin layer of icing, which can have the apperance of wax paper. It did not chew, I took it out, and confirmed that it was a small centimeter or two size of wax paper.
I feel any sane person would just make a comment to the staff, and in my case, a staff I know well and interact with every day.
It’s no different than finding a hair in my food somewhere. It’s my gut reaction to be polite and not say anything or make a big deal of it. However, it makes much more logical sense to just politely say something so they can check that the other bars don’t have a piece of wax paper stuck to the bottom.
It’s partially an inability to speak up for myself and partially an incredibly ability to avoid confrontation.
One thing is for certain, it won’t stop me from having another girl scout bar, perhaps later today.
