“An early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.” – Henry David Thoreau
After 59 days, through epic snowstorms and -30 windchills, I have yet to find any falsehoods in this statement.
Today I feel good. Perhaps it’s another month ending on an incredible sunrise. Two months complete, January felt like an accomplishment, and two finnish a second month feels like a bigger one. To feel that before 8AM is a blessing for the whole day. There were not many mornings in 2018 where I felt a sense of accomplishment before golden hour was over.
Photography has been very dear to me since I was a teenager. My mother, and her father, had a great influence in that from an early age.
Sometimes I let me my mind wander, what if I was a full-time photographer? In my teenage and college years it was a dream to be a professional snowboard or skateboard photographer. All I wanted to do was produce sequence photos, hence buying a camera capable of 10 frames per second, something you clearly don’t need for photographing a sunrise.
Today, my photography dreams are much different. One dream is being National Geographic’s official cold weather photographer. Do you think they have one? Chasing cold and all kinds of inclement weather year-round. Secondly, beach grass. I have a collection of beach grass photos that I cherish, which for whatever reason, brings me all the joy and tranquility. For the most part, those photos have never been seen.
As I chase the sun each morning, and as I’ve watched the ice change on Lake Superior daily for the two months, I’m finding myself continuously more fascinated with the sublte changes in nature. I have slowed down and found truth in the more time you spend in nature the more you want to protect it. Obvious, perhaps, but the important things can’t be overstated.
