Next door to the shop, at Babycakes Muffin Co, there’s an older man who over time at a snail’s pace I’ve begun to get to know. He always smiles and likes to tease. Sometimes he’ll walk up behind me and pull my neck hairs, or give me a soft little elbow jab in the ribs in the most grandpa way ever. Then, when sitting down with him, we’ll talk about the duality of life, what’s real in life, the yin and the yang. He invokes a great amount of curiosity about him, a sense wisdom, and the impression of being very comfortable in his world. Of course he would apologize if he ever said “his” world, because it doesn’t belong to anyone any of us, and he would go on to talk long about oneness, with a dose of self-inspired chuckles throughout. Finally, I learned more about his life. Learning that he has a daughter, an ex-wife, used to live in Kansas City and learned to love the city life, used to love the winter and cold but it doesn’t offer much for him anymore, and lives in a quiet apartment in town.
He also talked about driving around on his motorcycle and his favorite places to stop were coffee shops. Very much like myself, he was always curious to talk to people, but would never initiate the conversation. What he loved is when the coffee shop was so packed that it would force someone to sit with him and start up a conversation. Which is exactly what brought me to his table recently.
What stood out in our latest conversation was, “Look for the good and the humor.”
With his constant small chuckles, he’s a ray of sunshine, even when the sun doesn’t.
