What makes a perfect sunrise morning? Is it a colorful sky? Is it warm weather? Is it good company? Certainly all of the above help.
I would qualify today as one of those perfect sunrise mornings. And I say morning because it’s not just the sunrise, but the time leading up to it and time after it.
It starts by waking up with good energy, feeling rested and ready to go, in this case out the door at 5:25AM. Picking up a friend up on the way for good company adds to it, and when they hand you a cup of coffee when you pick them up, you know it’s going to be a good day. Then you get to the location ahead of schedule, it’s pleasantly warm and peaceful. There are some clouds in the way and you’re not quite sure what the sunrise is going to be like. While you wait it out you skip countless stones. Briefly the sun shines through. And then the magic happens when the fog rolls in, and suddenly you can’t see the island that was just a hundred yards in front of you a few minutes ago. The horizon vanishes and the sun comes and goes. Every five minutes seems to be a more inspiring view than the previous five minutes. Eventually hunger kicks in, you head back to town and get a couple donuts and coffee to continue your visit and share stories and inspirations. It’s 9AM, and my day already feels full and complete.
My relationship with the lake deepens, and that’s almost entirely interacting with her from the shore. I rarely go in the water, I don’t even know how to swim (embarrassing, but true, I’ve come to terms with it), I don’t have a kayak at my disposal, and I’ve rarely had the opportunity to be on a boat. Oh, and I don’t fish. I like to think of myself as having a deep relationship with her, but it is pale in comparison to so many others. The sailor who couldn’t sail.
