On this day in 1851, Henry David Thoreau delivered his first version of Walking as a lecture, which was later published in The Atlantic posthumously.
The quote I think of most frequently reads…
“In one half-hour I can walk off to some portion of the earth’s surface where a man does not stand from one year’s end to another, and there, consequently, politics are not, for they are but as the cigar-smoke of a man.” – Henry David Thoreau
In the first four months of 2019, there probably haven’t been many portions of the earth’s surface I’ve stood where no man has stood from one year to the next. In fact, many of the places I’ve stood are quite popular. Perhaps, in a few of those places, nobody has stood at sunrise from one year’s end to another. And that’s a start.
Every once in a great while I send out a newsletter with life updates, project updates, and various shenanigans.
