Steve Yzerman is back as a Red Wing, this time as the general manager. It’s a fitting thing. But for now I’ll put my love affair with Steve Yzerman, hockey, and the Red Wings aside.
Yzerman has been a role model of mine for nearly three decades. He has long been the example I would use for the importance of silent leadership, or leading from behind. Even though I’ve never been in the same room as him, unless Joe Louis Arena count?
For years, I’ve been quoting Steve Yzerman for saying, “If you’re not nervous, you don’t care.” Every time I hear a friend say they’re nervous about something, I drop that line and credit Steve Yzerman. And, even though I’ve done lots of research on it, I have absolutely zero knowledge of where the quip came from and how I began to associate it with Steve Yzerman. But I think I’ll continue to credit him with saying it and hope he doesn’t mind.
